GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why are people so angry at Sandra Scoppettone?

Yeah, there's a reason I rarely write exactly what I'm thinking on this little-known blog. That reason being, a reason just like this. A writer writes truthfully about the pitfalls of being published and speaks candidly about her fears for her future as a writer--and suddenly she is not only evil incarnate, but also the stupidest person who ever lived. And a lynch mob of total strangers gets in line to call her names and snidely (smugly?) tells her to shut up, while industry peers/colleagues chide and patronize her for so "dimwittedly" and offensively speaking her mind.

'Tis true that if you post your thoughts and opinions in a public forum, you're opening yourself up to be criticized by the public. But so much for writers writing about the writing life, huh?

Who's angry?

People aren't angry, we don't know her enough to emote that heavily towards her.

I can't speak for anybody else, but I certainly do think that author bloggers are subject to a double standard that don't apply to bloggers like myself.

I'm not a writer who depends on the goodwill of editors, publishing houses, and readers, so I can write just about damned near anything I want and get away with it.
The simple fact is, if you're an author, you can't. Sad but true.

I'm certainly not angry, I just love the ripple effect that one poorly thought out blog entry can cause.

Anyway, before this I hadn't heard of SS, now she's in my radar. It's not all bad. She'd have never got this much attention by people extolling the virtue of her books. There's no such thing as bad publicity you know.

I'll admit, I hadn't heard of her before this, either. I agree that published authors have to watch what they say on blogs--but I also think that it's totally okay for a published author to express his or her frustration with the publishing experience on a blog. Frustration is part of the experience whether you become hugely successful or not, and I think future published authors should know that there can be some unexpected roadblocks. Anyway, it seems that's all SS was really trying to do--express her frustration--and from what some messagers wrote in response, it was my personal conclusion that they were angry.

Thanks for visiting, Karen, it is good to hear from someone new. :)
